Music Review

I recently received 3 CD’s from Sequoia records, one of the better New Age labels. On the way to the Chita Rivera show in Seattle we gave them a listen and WOW, what great driving CDs.

Two of the CD’s by the group Achillea were intoxicating in sensuality, and yet hypnotic, a chill-out mosaic combining all the entrancing elements that move the feet and relax the soul. On the CD “The Nine Worlds” we have spellbinding classical vocals by Helene Hortyck, tremendous instrumentation by Jens Gad of Enigma fame, the background is haunting while at the same time uplifting and profound. This is the kind of music that can give you chills one moment and have you ready to move slowly trance like the next.

The other CD by Achillea, "Amadas Estrellas” has Spanish singer Luisa Fernandez tantalize and seduce with her vocals. Though both CD’s are atmospheric masterpieces with whispery vocals, chants, excellent body moving beats, and very provocatively used electric guitar, “Amadas” is a touch more upbeat, while “The Nine Worlds” is slower paced, more ethereal, both are serene trips. One will have you move trancelike, the other you can dance. If you are a fan of New Age, worldbeat, chill music, you need both these disc in your collection.

The other CD sent to us by Sequoia is beautiful and haunting if you are a fan of beautifully done Native American type atmospheric music. Imagine a world of tribal drums, intoxicating Native American flute melodies, ancient chants, crystal bowls, and guitars. Too much stress in your life?

Need a glorious way to unwind and relax. This CD by Award winning artists David and Steve Gordon is your ticket to a peaceful soundscape, “Shaman’s Vision Journey.”

Medwyn Goodall, “Medicine Woman III ” this is one of the most prolific New Age artists. He has recorded for about 7 different labels. Many years ago, he released “Medicine Woman” and it skyrocketed on the New Age Charts. It was so popular that it was re-released in 2001 after “Medicine Woman 2” was released in 2000 and again was very successful. All three CD’s have much in common, though of course they are all somewhat different. If you like New Age music you want at least one of these titles.

Ruthie Foster, “Stages” When I saw the movie Dream Girls, I found some of the vocal performances very powerful and moving. It made me think about my massive music collection and I realized that although I have thousands of fabulous CD’s that very few of them are goose bump powerful. It motivated me to search for such a recording. My search has been rewarded. I have come across one of the most moving, and powerful CD’s that I can recall. I guess we would label this soon to be classic, contemporary blues, since it has elements of the blues, soul, folk and even gospel. If you desire a performance that will take your breath away then you want this record.
